My kid is not a good speller at all. Somewhere along the line, he didn't seem to get a good phonics background and you can tell this in his spelling. Since his grade level is one that puts a lot of emphasis on writing and because one of his teachers hammers him for spelling errors, we decided to give this a try.I have had him work on a lesson or two a week and then see what kind of words they were and randomly ask him how to spell some, especially the ones he missed on the little quizzes that are put after each section. I have noticed an improvement in his spelling, especially for common errors (and especially those rule breakers!) and we plan to finish the book before too long.I like that the book focuses on listing the rule and the rule breakers. It is important to know that rules aren't always hard and fast. The quizzes are short and it doesn't feel like a test. More of a check to make sure you got the information presented.
My husband, who is a brilliant guy but has never been a great speller, had me buy this for him. He loves it!
Very excited about this workbook!!! Highly recommend it to anyone even if it is just to brush up on spelling. I like the way the workbook is organized as the subject matter is easy to follow, builds upon one component to the next, comprehensive and quite fun!!! I would recommend it to anyone even if it is just for a quick brush up.

Spelling is the thing that always hurt me in writing and now that I am old I getting to learn to spell.
I loved Joanne's other books, and her website, so definitely had to get this. It's for both American and British English users. It's a practical book full of information and exercises. Some rules are easy, for example, adding -es to words, the y to i rule and adding -ly to words, but some take a bit more brainpower. As the book says, if you don't remember the rule at least you know why the spelling is the way it is, and maybe you'll remember the letter pattern and see what looks right. The one thing about her books is they're easy to understand and no jargon, unless absolutely necessary and that's why there's a useful section on key terms so if you're not sure what a noun, adjective or verb is then the book explains them. You can dip into the book and use it as a reference book or you can work your way through the book.
Understanding spelling rules is one of many great strategies to help you improve your spelling. Knowing spelling rules adds another layer to your spelling knowledge and helps you realise why there are 'strange' letter patterns and why spelling is the way it is.
