López Nieves ha ganado el Premio Nacional de Literatura de Puerto Rico en dos ocasiones. Fundó el primer programa de Maestría en Creación Literaria de América Latina en la Universidad del Sagrado Corazón (San Juan de Puerto Rico), el cual actualmente dirige. También es el creador y director de la Biblioteca Digital Ciudad Seva (CiudadSeva.com), uno de los portales ciberliterarios más visitados del mundo. Sus obras han sido traducidas al alemán, inglés, islandés, neerlandés, polaco e italiano. Desde el 2007 es Escritor Residente de la Universidad del Sagrado Corazón. En el 2009 publicó su novela más reciente, "El silencio de Galileo", que asimismo ha recibido importantes elogios en tres continentes.
